Full Version: New JIRA Client Feature: Summary Table -- Feedback Needed

Dear JIRA Client EAP subscribers,

Starting from EAP build 2055, JIRA Client has a feature called "Summary Table". This is more-or-less standard reporting tool, seen from the perspective of an interactive issue tracker. Described simply, it is a two-dimensional distribution.

To work with this feature, just install the newest JIRA Client and explore the new display area in the lower left corner, cut from the Navigation Tree. Don't get scared by strange icons (those are actually stubs, as icon production is somewhat behind code production). This area shows tabular distribution of issues that pass the filter selected above - in the navigation tree. Since the table is not configured yet, it shows only the total number of issues.

To configure the table, use "configuration mode" action atop the table. Again, don't be scared by too many controls springing into view - just expand the summary table area using splitters above and to the right. Try various options and see how it works.

Feedback Needed

This is only a basic implementation of this feature. We believe that more work is required to properly implant this feature into existing application. Questionable points are: where should the table reside, how table's configuration should be saved (globally, per-node, etc), how should we determine table's context (the query that provides issues for the report), and others.

There are numerous ways to implement this feature and half of them are quite valid and correct. But we have to choose and that's the reason for this topic.

We'd be grateful for any opinions from outside the team. If you like this feature and if you see how to make it better than in the current EAP version, please let us know.

Best regards,
Igor

Thanks smile.gif

We'll add export button (what format, CSV?).

The counters configuration allow to set up a "third dimension" -- you can specify N filters which will be applied in each cell. Each cell will then show N numbers. I agree this is not obvious and we'll redesign the whole UI. I've added a feature request for this: http://bugzilla.almworks.com/show_bug.cgi?id=451

Very usefull feature.
Is it possible to add print functionality ?

Thanks Yuri
Igor Sereda
Yuri, thanks for the feedback. Printing is still missing from JIRA Client, but in the upcoming release we'll have "export to CSV" for summary table, so you'll be able to quickly export the table, then open in Excel or Open Office and print.

Printing will be added to JIRA Client a bit later.

Best regards,
Igor

Yuri,

Starting from JIRA Client 1.2 it's possible to export summary table into CSV.

It would be great if Summary Table could be added under query and saved. That way there would be a way to view status of the project quckly.

For example:

Current Project
- Untriaged bugs (query)
- All active bugs (query)
- Bugs by assignee/priority (sumary table)
- bugs by component/priority (sumary table)
...
Igor Sereda
Nikolay,

Thanks for the feedback. We've been thinking about something like that, and your suggestion is interesting. We'll figure out how to implement it in a future version.

Best regards,
Igor
